What is seagrass?

Seagrass is the unsung hero of the ocean.

Seagrasses are the only flowering plants that thrive entirely underwater, forming dense meadows in shallow, sunlit coastal waters stretching from tropical lagoons to the edges of the Arctic. These underwater gardens are not just beautiful, they are vital to the ocean’s health.

Known as “the lungs of the sea,” seagrasses release oxygen into the water and absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere at rates up to 35 times faster than the Amazon rainforest. Their dense root systems protect shorelines from erosion, filter pollutants, and provide food and shelter for a vast variety of marine life from fish and crustaceans to turtles and seahorses. 

Because they’re extremely sensitive to changes in water quality, seagrasses also serve as a critical indicator of ocean health. But despite their importance, seagrasses are disappearing at the alarming rate of 7% a year due to pollution, coastal development, and climate change.

 Protecting these ecosystems isn’t just about saving plants, it’s about saving the ocean.
 

 Seagrass survives in constantly shifting conditions - changing tides, light levels, and currents. It bends, flows, and adapts. 

It's worth remembering that golf, surfing, and life demand the same.
